A GOOD CONCEPTUAL DIAGRAM IS WORTH MORE THAN A THOUSAND WORDS

Good written communication is very important, but it is sometimes easy to forget that complex concepts or ideas can also be presented visually. So take extra care when writing that journal article, grant application or corporate statement. A good conceptual diagram, figure or chart that captures or illustrates your ideas simply and effectively can make the communication much more successful.

Complex ideas are often multi-layered, with many different aspects that all need to be explained to the reader. An illustration, or conceptual diagram that presents these ideas in a simple format will appeal both to the expert and the lay reader, helping them to better understand the message.

Below is a conceptual diagram we created for the Australian Department of Climate Change to illustrate its 2009 National Framework for Climate Change Science. The Report can be found at:http://www.climatechange.gov.au/~/media/publications/science/National-Framework-Climate-Change-Science.pdf.
